Circle vs Skool: Why I Chose Circle for My Online Community
Choosing the right platform for your online community could be the difference between building a thriving, profitable membership and watching your business stagnate. In my video, I break down my decision-making process between Circle and Skool, two of the most popular community platforms available today.
This decision matters because your platform is the engine that drives your entire online community, and getting it wrong can cost you thousands in lost revenue and endless frustration.
I walk through every consideration that went into my final choice and reveal the one feature that completely sealed the deal for me.
Why Your Platform Choice Actually Matters
I used to think platform selection was just another software decision, but I explain in my video why that thinking is dead wrong. Your community platform isn’t just hosting content—it’s amplifying your message and creating the environment where your members become so invested that they become your personal army of advocates. When you choose the right platform and build your community correctly, your happiest customers transform into your best salespeople, spreading the word and driving your monthly recurring revenue through the roof.
The problem is that this only happens when you do it right. You need a platform that creates what I call the “Netflix effect”—where members want to binge your content without getting overwhelmed by too many options. We’ve all had those movie nights where we spend two hours watching trailers and never actually pick something to watch. Your community can’t be that kind of junk drawer experience.
The Features That Both Platforms Share
In my research, I discovered that Circle and Skool are remarkably similar on paper, which is exactly what made this decision so difficult. Both platforms host courses and videos, both have community walls for member interaction, and both allow you to finally get out of those cluttered Facebook groups. Each platform accepts payments directly, hosts live streams and live rooms as alternatives to Zoom, and offers awesome mobile apps that keep your members engaged on the go.
I actually set up accounts on both platforms to thoroughly test them out. During this process, I consulted with friends who had strong opinions on both sides. Some friends raved about Skool‘s capabilities and clean, straightforward interface, making it seem like the obvious choice. But then I spoke with Circle enthusiasts who made compelling cases for Circle’s superior data capabilities.
The Data Advantage That Got My Attention
One friend in particular described Circle as a full-blown data powerhouse that lets you see exactly how your members are interacting with your content. For someone who makes data-driven decisions, this was a huge selling point. Who wouldn’t want to get inside the minds of their community members and use that intelligence to tailor every aspect of their experience?
At this point in my decision-making process, I was deep in analysis mode, juggling features and trying to figure out which platform would serve my community now while also supporting the big vision I have for the future. I kept thinking about how important it is to not just host content, but to create a dynamic, evolving space that keeps members coming back hungry for more.
The more I researched, the more I realized this wasn’t just about features or data—I needed a community focused on real connection, engagement, and growth. I had to ask myself (and you should ask yourself this too): where do I want my community to be a year from now? Five years from now? Would Skool‘s straightforward interface be enough to sustain that growth, or did Circle’s customization and powerful data insights give it the edge?
Why I Ultimately Chose Circle
After all my research and testing, I chose Circle. In my video, I explain that this decision came down to thinking about the bigger picture and the long-term trajectory of my business. I needed a platform that could grow with me and handle not just where my community is now, but where it’s going to be six months, a year, or even five years from now.
I’ve seen firsthand what happens when you make the wrong choice—you end up with a stagnant community, disengaged members, and a business stuck in neutral. You might even become resentful of your own business. But when you choose right, that’s where the magic happens. Your community transforms from just a group of people into a movement, and movements make money.
I loved Circle’s layout and interface, and the ability to customize everything down to the colors was a major advantage. On Skool, every community I visited looked basically the same, which limits your ability to create a unique brand experience.
The Missing Piece That Almost Changed Everything
However, there was one major feature that Circle was missing until recently, and it almost pushed me toward Skool instead: built-in gamification. In my video, I explain why this was such a big deal. Gamification isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the secret sauce to keeping a community engaged, motivated, and invested for the long term.
I love the Charlie Munger quote: “Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome.” When you can incentivize your audience and community, you’re far more likely to get the outcome you want. When people are rewarded for their engagement—whether it’s reaching new levels, earning points, or collecting badges—they stay motivated and keep coming back for more.
Think about it: it’s the same reason people return to workout classes that celebrate their progress with leaderboards, or why they keep going back to that coffee shop to fill up their punch card. There’s a sense of accomplishment and excitement about what comes next, and that’s exactly what gamification does for your community.
Circle’s Game-Changing Gamification Feature
Before Circle’s gamification feature became available, I was manually creating incentives in my membership community. This meant tracking engagement through forms and spreadsheets, which worked but wasn’t as seamless or scalable as I wanted it to be. But now everything has changed—Circle has rolled out its brand new built-in gamification feature, and I explain in my video why it’s been worth the wait.
Here’s how it works: every like that a member receives on their comments or posts earns them points. The more points they accumulate, the higher they move through different levels. You can even give those levels fun names so members get to upgrade their identity. What better way to drive participation than by offering recognition and status for contributing?
This is awesome for engagement, but even more importantly, consumption is the key to conversion. This gamification system helps your members get better results and stay in your programs longer, or even upsell into new levels because you’re guiding them through their success journey.
Getting Creative With Level Names
When building your community, I recommend getting creative with how you name the levels. Connect them to fun milestones that resonate with your community’s theme. If you’re running a fitness community, maybe you name levels after fitness achievements like “Rookie Runner” or “Marathon Master.” This instills a new identity that members are eager to grow into and creates a stronger connection between your members and the community’s goals.
The Power of Leaderboards
In my video, I dive into the leaderboard feature because a little competition can make you a whole lot more profitable. Some people claim they don’t care about competition, but I don’t believe them. Whether we admit it or not, there’s something satisfying about seeing your name at the top of a leaderboard. More than just building status, you’re creating an environment where members are motivated to contribute more, and ultimately they get more out of the community because they get what they put into it.
The leaderboard showcases the most active members over different time frames—7 days, 30 days, or all time. This visibility creates a fascinating dynamic. For example, let’s say you have a member who’s been a lurker up to this point. When she sees how her activity directly impacts her standing in the community, she starts contributing more. Her content gets noticed, which motivates her to contribute even more, and boom—she’s hooked.
This isn’t just individual recognition or cutthroat competition. It’s healthy, productive interaction that benefits everyone involved. When members see others climbing the ranks, it pushes them to step up their game too, creating a ripple effect where one person’s engagement inspires others.
Understanding Activity Scores
Circle shows an activity score that gives a more nuanced view of each member’s engagement. This score breaks down into presence, contribution, participation, and connection. A member might have a high contribution score because they consistently provide valuable content, but if their presence score is lower, this indicates they’re contributing infrequently but with high quality—which is also important to recognize.
This data is invaluable for community managers. You can identify your star contributors and perhaps approach them to take on more prominent roles, like becoming a moderator or content creator. These metrics give you a complete picture of member engagement, helping you tailor your interactions with each person.
Automated Workflows That Save Time
One of the most game-changing features I discuss in my video is Circle’s automated workflows. Managing a community can be time-consuming, and the more it grows, the harder it becomes to maintain personal touch points. That’s where workflows come into play. These automated workflows let you set up tasks that run in the background, like sending a congratulations message when a member completes a course or re-engaging people who haven’t logged in for 30 days with a simple reminder.
The customization doesn’t stop there. You can create workflows for nearly any action in your community. If you want to reward members who consistently contribute to discussions, you can set up a workflow that sends them a special badge or unlocks exclusive content after they reach a certain milestone. This makes your community management so much more efficient while keeping the experience personalized and engaging.
Custom Badges and Rewards
Circle 3.0 also allows you to create custom badges and rewards tailored to your community. This is where Circle really shines because it lets you align gamification with your community’s unique culture and goals. You could set up a reward for members who reach level five—maybe a custom badge, access to an exclusive webinar or course, or an automated congratulations message. The beauty of this feature is that it’s not just about making the experience fun—it’s about making it meaningful.
How Circle Compares to Skool on Gamification
Both Circle and Skool have the basics covered—leaderboards, points, and levels. These are great for keeping your community engaged. But Skool is missing something crucial: data, customization, and advanced automation. Sure, you can do some basic automation in Skool, but if you’re really looking to level up your community experience, this is where Skool starts to fall short.
Circle doesn’t just offer the same leaderboards and points—it lets you supercharge them. You can create automations that trigger rewards, special access, or personalized content based on exactly what your members are doing. Most importantly, Circle’s data capabilities give you access to massive data sets that show exactly how your community is interacting. You can track behavior, analyze trends, and make data-driven decisions that keep your community thriving.
Flexibility and Control
I want to address a common question about Circle’s gamification features: are you required to use them? The answer is no. You have full control—you can turn off gamification features entirely, or you can make the leaderboard private so that only you have access to it. This flexibility is one of the reasons Circle is so adaptable to different types of communities.
From customizable levels and rewards to automated workflows and detailed activity scores, Circle makes your community more engaging and helps you manage it more effectively. If you want to take your community to the next level, I highly recommend giving Circle 3.0 a try.
